Musings on eating + moving

Tales from the Summit: Beating the Plateau

Posted by Erin Ryan on Jul. 8, 2016

We love sharing stories of movement and change from across the PS eater landscape… this week, the spotlight is on Alex Cohen, host of “Take Two” on Southern California’s public ration station KPCC, she describes how PS meals have been a big part of her upward spiral to weight loss and pull-ups.

Here’s Alex’s story…
I’ve struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I’ve tried just about everything at one point or another – Weight Watchers, juice fasts, Lean Cuisine. Always looking for something I didn’t have to think too hard about cooking. Nothing ever managed to stick long term. About two summers ago, someone turned me on to the Whole 30 challenge (no gluten, dairy, soy, sugar or grains - basically nothing processed). It was hands down one of the hardest things I’d ever done. The sugar headaches alone while detoxing were enough to make me want to stab myself in the eye. But I lost a fair chunk of bulge and pounds. I felt SO much better. My sleep was deep and beautiful (pretty crucial considering I had a toddler at the time and was a working mom!). But then I plateaued once more. Portion control was still a struggle – lunches were either boring leftovers or VERY expensive and way-too-large trips to the salad bar at Whole Foods. Then I found a new gym (the AMAZING CrossFit Eagle Rock) and found out about Power Supply.

I figured I’d give it a shot.

Within the first week, I was hooked! I LOVE the variety of dishes and flavors. The portions are PERFECT for me and force me to eat what I need… not what seems fun at the time but leaves me bloated and frustrated later. I love that I can pick it up at the gym (which is always a nice extra motivator to get me to work out). I love the great balance of protein, vegetables, and starches. I love the convenience of not having to think about “what’s for lunch?” on crazy workdays (translation: EVERY day). And when I do track my food, it’s SUPER easy for me to log everything as most meals are already in Lose It.

I’m about to turn 44 years old and I’m in the best shape of my life. I’ve dropped about 15 pounds (which is a LOT on a 5’2” frame) and more importantly, I’ve made substantial differences in my fat/muscle ratio. I can lift heavier weights at the gym and am accomplishing goals I’ve been working on for years (hello pull-ups).

Power Supply isn’t a diet. It isn’t a gimmick. It’s real food, delicious food, inspirational food. It is my supply and it gives me power. I couldn’t live without it!
