Musings on eating & moving

Kate Bakes' story & a green smoothie recipe

Finding local independent chefs for our growing community is all about the combination of talent & passion for making food that tastes freaking great and is super good for you.

Nowhere is that more true than in the world of bars (the ones you eat, not visit). So many of them purport to be good for you, but are full of hard to pronounce ingredients & other wacky stuff. So it was awesome to find an aligned partner in Kate Bakes. Not just because she shares the view that ingredients in a bar shouldn’t much outnumber days in the week, but also because we’re inspired by the story of eating & life change that brought her to the cooking world.

Two years into law school Kate found herself too sick to finish out the year. She’d already cut dairy from her diet to tackle some digestive issues but it clearly wasn’t enough. So she took a break from school to try and fully solve the puzzle. The mix that worked best for her? No meat, gluten or dairy… but tons of cooking and baking for herself to make sure she had stuff that made her feel better and kept her taste buds happy.

Pretty quickly she found a good rhythm, but on-the-go snacks remained a stubborn challenge, rife with opportunity to get off the rails. So she did what entrepreneurs often do: started experimenting with her own solutions. Thus was born the first of her famous bars, the awesome Banana Cinnamon Oatmeal that had her omnivore and veggie friends alike begging for more.

“I realized the only way to know if this was going to work was if I gave it my full attention.”

A year and a half of working two jobs later – Kate took el grande plunge and decided to pursue her passion full time. Starting with just two flavors, she’s since expanded to 6 variations on the original bar, along with three totally new creations.

Given her interesting personal journey and where it landed her, we figured she’d have some interesting tips on eating well and building something new:

  • If you want to start a business, just do it. Taking the first leap is definitely the hardest, but start taking small steps and eventually those will accumulate and you’ll be surprised by how far you’ve come! Oh, and to make the jump real, legitimize it – name your business!
  • A few simple routines to be prepared for the slings and arrows of the week can go a long way.  Before Monday dawns, try loading up your bag with a few snacks, and stash some in your car. That way you’ll have something to nibble on when the week’s inevitable curve balls arrive. Even in crazy moments, you’ll feel better about it knowing you have something you like to nosh on.

Thanks, Kate for sharing your story, tips and best of all… your bars. Need a quick, on-the-go snack to take with you? Grab a snack bar (3 flavors to pick from) and here's a bonus recipe with video for a tasty green smoothie! See the full recipe below.
